Mapping Resistance - Theatrical Readings dedicated to the Italian Resistance Movement

On the occasion of the 80th anniversary of Italy’s Liberation from Nazifascism, the Italian Cultural Institute, in collaboration with the Department of French and Italian at Northwestern University, presents a performance of theatrical readings dedicated to the Italian Resistance movement. Through a reading of selected stories — translated into English by students of Italian at Northwestern University in collaboration with students of the Università La Sapienza of Rome — we will rediscover stories and testimonies of the events that shaped the Italian Resistance across the peninsula from 1943 to 1945. The Liberation Day, celebrated every year on April 25, commemorates the end of the Nazi-fascist occupation in Italy during World War II. On April 25, 1945, partisan forces and the Allies liberated the major cities of Northern Italy, including Milan and Turin, marking the definitive defeat of the fascist regime and the beginning of the transition to democracy. The date was chosen in 1946 as a symbol of the struggle waged by the partisans against the Nazi troops and Mussolini’s collaborationist government. Today, the anniversary is celebrated with institutional events, parades, and demonstrations throughout Italy, honoring the fallen and reaffirming the values of freedom and democracy. The readings will be performed by students of the Department of French and Italian at Northwestern University, together with actress Claire Hart Proepper, founder of theatre company Laughing Stock. The performance is written and directed by Prof. Daniele Biffanti in collaboration with Claire Hart Proepper. This is a free event with registration
